RPC History

Regional Prevention Center History

For over 35 years, the Regional Prevention Center has worked within the communities of Wichita and Sedgwick County to promote and provide state of the art, research-based prevention services that includes technical assistance to enhance core competencies and utilize the CSAP core strategies.

The RPC utilizes and promotes the  Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) and the Communities That Care (CTC) model in an effort to effectively impact the nine Connect Kansas outcomes and the following state outcomes: reduce alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use; delay age of first use; and decrease favorable attitudes toward youth ATOD use.

Since 1970, the RPC has always maintained the mission of prevention of substance abuse within the community. The current mission of providing leadership in this arena reflects an internal mandate to not just provide services but to shape the direction and impact of prevention efforts in the community. Toward this end, the RPC views as its primary clients or constituents the children and youth whose attitudes, decisions, and behaviors related to substance abuse and the other problem areas will be impacted through its efforts. The RPC will impact these children and youth through its direct work with those persons in the community who have the position and motivation to influence the identified risk and protective factors and ultimately the ATOD and Connect Kansas outcomes.
